Heritage tourism

Heritage Tourism refers to travel motivated by a desire to learn about places, people and the tangible and intangible cultural, historic and environmental values associated with them. This form of tourism focuses on visiting historic and archeological sites, learning about local traditions and customs, participating in cultural events, as well as learning about industrial heritage, including old canals, rail lines, factories etc... (definition based on The National Trust for Historic Preservation).

Heritage tourism opportunities along Greenways

Several initiatives aimed at developing a market for heritage tourism along Greenways have been started along the Amber Trail Greenway and the Green Bicycle East Carpathian Greenway. An important initiative in this regard is that of the ‘Social Economy on the Amber Trail' project funded by the European Commission's Equal Programme. Under the scheme, five social enterprises were established by community-based non-governmental groups committed to conservation of natural and cultural values, operating in South Poland. These companies have involved unemployed young people from rural communities along the Greenways in identifying and building up tourist products based on local heritage resources.

Opportunities for visitors offered by social enterprises operating along Greenways...
Travelling along Greenways in Poland, you will taste regional cuisine, visit historic sites included in UNESCO's World Heritage List, meet local artisans and learn about craftsmanship, which has contributed over the centuries to the wealth of Polish regions.

Travelling along Greenways is an alternative for those who are tired of large resorts and mass-tourism. Our offer is for all who want to experience natural and cultural heritage in a direct way, and for whom it is important to contribute to the development of community-based initiatives aimed at protecting natural and cultural values.
